Jewelry Cleaning and Care

Jewelry cleaning and care

Here are some tips for cleaning and caring for your Pyrite and Pearls jewelry. With a little TLC your handmade jewelry will last a lifetime.

Regardless of how often you wear your handmade pieces, they could all benefit from a little care and gentle cleaning.

Things to do often:

I would recommend taking off your jewelry after every wear. This will ensure their longevity, and keep them looking good with every wear. Perfumes, makeup, sunscreen and other products can build up on your pieces and its best to remove them after every wear. Gently wiping them down with a soft jewelry cloth will help prevent too much build up.

Things to do occasionally, or as needed:

For metal pieces that need a deep clean, use warm soapy water and a gentle toothbrush to remove any debris or harmful chemicals that might come in to contact with your jewelry. Be sure to dry your pieces well after cleaning.

For sterling silver and brass pieces, you could also make a paste of baking soda and water and gently clean the piece with this mixture.

Alternatively, use a special jewelry cleaning cloth like Sunshine Polishing Cloth to clean your jewelry. Simply wipe and buff the piece with circular motion to clean.

Additional tips:

Put on your jewelry last to avoid contact with harsh chemicals that can be in things like perfume, hairspray, make-up etc.

Take off your jewelry before you go to sleep. This will help prevent tangles and it will last longer.

Store clean and dry jewelry in an airtight container such as a ziplock bag. Sterling silver and brass pieces especially benefit from storage in am airtight container as they tend to tarnish when exposed to air.

It’s best to avoid showering or swimming with your jewelry on. Fresh water isn’t harmful to your jewelry, however chemicals in pools and hot tubs, salt water and harsh soaps and shampoos are best avoided. Not only will they build up on your jewelry, but they can also alter the finish, color and composition of metals and some gemstones.

Sunscreen can damage the color and finish of metals and certain gemstones so remember to let your sunscreen dry completely before putting on your jewelry. If some accidentally gets on your jewelry, clean as soon as possible.
